Howard Lederer was born into in a family of 5 where he loved betting on different card games at a young age. He found himself becoming really competitive in the above-mentioned card games while playing his dad. After graduating from high school, Howard decided to put college on hold for a bit and moved away to New York to play some formidable chess. While playing chess, he was introduced to a poker game taking place in the rear of the room. Howard’s first two years were rough as he would play countless hours and lose most times. He earned some additional money by becoming an assistant for the poker enthusiasts. He believed he might better his game by balancing his life outside of poker. He made an effort to acquire more rest and focus attention more on poker.
The real improvement in his skills began when he started gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the greatest players would frequently challenge each other. He was able to access some of the greatest players in chess. With their help, Howard would sharpen his logical thinking abilities. Howard applied these strategy concepts to the game of No-Limit holdem.
He also helped his sister Annie Duke master poker. Annie Duke was a great student of poker as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the proper choice. Howard told Annie to head out to Vegas and compete in the World Series of Poker tournaments. Annie is one of the strongest women players the poker world has ever seen. Howard Lederer relocated to Sin City in 1993 and played cash games for the successive 10 years. When the WPT gained popularity, he decided to compete in more tournaments.
