Omaha Hi-Lo: Basic Summary
Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most complex but favored poker games. It is a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for play from all levels of players. This is the primary reason why a once obscure variation, has increased in popularity so amazingly.
Omaha/8 starts like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to each player. A round of betting follows in which gamblers can wager, check, or fold. 3 cards are dealt out, this is called the flop. A further sequence of betting happens. After all the gamblers have either called or dropped out, a further card is flipped on the turn. Another sequence of wagering follows at which point the river card is flipped. The players will have to make the best high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is where many players can get baffled. Contrasted to Texas Hold ‘Em, in which the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi/low the player has to utilize precisely three cards on the board, and exactly two hole cards. No more, not a single card less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot may be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the best possible hand out of everyone’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the identical approach in almost every poker game.
A low hand is more complex, but really opens up the play. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the weakest hand that can be put together, with the lowest value being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and smaller. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there’s no lower hand presented, the higher hand wins the complete pot.
While it seems difficult at the start, after a couple of rounds you will be able to get the base nuances of play with ease. Seeing as you have individuals betting for the low and wagering for the high, and since so many cards are being used at the same time, Omaha/8 provides an exciting collection of wagering options and seeing that you have numerous players trying for the high, along with many battling for the low hand. If you like a game with a lot of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha 8 or better.
